Harmonious but Different:
the Predicaments and Their Solution in Comparative Education Research

Abstract:Being harmonious but different is the philosophical and methodological basis in compara⁃
tive education research. However, current comparative education research mainly focuses on the thought
of being same but conflicting, thus the thought of being harmonious but different faces both theoretical
and practical predicament. The current situation results from the impact of cultural colonization which in
the long term keeps the research on the formal learning from others. Moreover, culture misreading even
casual interpretation which gets in the way of in⁃depth comparisons. Comparative education research
should change itself from formal comparison to cultural comparison, and intensify researchers’ under⁃
standing of different traditions and cultures and thus can the realization of being harmonious but different
be possible.
