Abstract:With the great booming of narrative studies in recent years, the famous Danish writer Ka⁃
ren Blixen, who is claimed to be the modern “Scherazade”, attracts great attention in western countries.
Scholars in China, however, have not paid due attention to her works yet. With the insight of narrative i⁃
dentity theories, this paper discusses the unique strategy (reverse merger) of narrative identity construc⁃
tion reflected in one of her famous story The Immortal Story: Mr. Clay achieves a kind of narratability of
his life story by replacing theanonymous sailor in a well⁃known story with his own name.
Key words:Isak Dinesen; the Immortal Story; narrative identity; “reverse merger”
