The Changes of China’s Academic Map and Revival of
Borderland Research during the 1930s and the 1940s

Abstract:The revival of borderland research during the 1930s and the 1940s is born out of the re⁃
sponse of political and academic circles to both border crisis and national crisis. The constant change in
national strategy of home front, the inward movement of the KMT government and large numbers of colle⁃
ges and universities as well as research institutions contributed to the significant change of China’s higher
education and academic map. The scholars who originally had lived away from the border or had never
been engaged in border research happened to gain the opportunity of experiencing and studying the bor⁃
ders, which contributed a lot to the revival of the relevant research and the improvement of the research
pattern. Consequently, southwest research gradually achieved the comparable place with its northwest
counterpart. The history of this period opens a window for us to delve into the relationship between politics
and academics in the era of the Republic of China.
