Abstract:PortuguesehadarrivedJapaninthemiddleofthe16thcentury,andtheysuccess-
fullyestablishedtraderelationswithJapanese.Inthebeginningofthe17thcentury,especiallyaf-
terTokugawaIeyasuforbadeChristianity,thetradestartedtowane.Themostimportantreason
forthedeclinationwasthatPortuguesemerchantskeptrelationshipwithCatholicmissionary
whichmadeshogunanxious.Furthermore,crisisofindebtedness,fallofCatholicnavy,competi-
tionfromothercountriesanddefectsofPortuguesetrade,alsomadethetradedeclined.Atlast
shogunclosedthedoorofJapanandevictedallPortuguese,anditmeanttheendofthefirstcom-
municationbetweenJapanandEurope.
